Maersk rolls out electric trucks for inland transport in Vietnam

A.P. Moller–Maersk will deploy a fleet of heavy-duty electric trucks for inland container transport in Vietnam starting in the first quarter of 2026.

The electric trucks will operate on key routes linking the company’s container freight stations with major ports across Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong and Dong Nai.

Maersk will deploy a fleet of heavy-duty electric trucks for inland container transport in Vietnam from 2026.

The initiative marks one of Maersk’s first steps toward electrifying road transport in Vietnam, as the Danish logistics group expands its decarbonisation programme across Asia.

The company is working with a local partner to complete a charging station located about five kilometres from its container freight station to ensure uninterrupted operations once the fleet goes live.

The launch follows Maersk’s recent expansion of its logistics footprint in the country, including the opening of its first self-operated bonded warehouse in Nam Dinh Vu, Hai Phong. The facility supports growing demand for duty-free storage and faster cargo flows in northern Vietnam. Maersk also maintains offices and service locations in Hanoi, Da Nang, Quy Nhon and Can Tho, along with major logistics centres in Ho Chi Minh City and Hai Phong.

Kevin Burrell, Managing Director of Maersk for the Mekong region, said interest in electric transport solutions is rising in Vietnam, driven by greater environmental awareness and advances in vehicle technology.

According to the International Council on Clean Transportation, electric trucks can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 63 per cent per trip compared with diesel-powered trucks.

To ensure that electricity consumed by the fleet is backed by renewable sources, Maersk will purchase Energy Attribute Certificates in the form of I-RECs, a globally recognised standard used to verify renewable energy consumption. This will allow the company to offer a low-emission inland transport service with transparent emissions reporting to support customers’ ESG requirements.

Maersk plans to expand its electric truck fleet in the coming years and aims to fully phase out diesel-powered trucks by 2040. Electrification of road freight is gaining momentum across the logistics sector amid rising fuel costs and tightening sustainability commitments.

The group, which operates in more than 130 countries, is targeting net-zero emissions across its global operations by 2040. Its electric truck programme is already underway in markets including Thailand, China, Brazil and Spain.
