Mondelēz Kinh Do affirms it is willing to cooperate with other companies to find solutions that benefits environment, aiming at realizing circular economy model.

Like other FMCG businesses, from 2024, Mondelēz Kinh Do has to carry out extended producer responsibility (EPR), which is a policy approach under which producers are given a significant responsibility – financial and/or physical – for the treatment or disposal of post-consumer products. EPR may take the form of a reuse, buyback, or recycling program.

Sharing with TheLEADER, Bui Khanh Nguyen, public affairs and communications senior leader of Mondelēz Kinh Do revealed that the company has been ready for the EPR roadmap towards a circular economy model in Vietnam. It has done initial preparations to be more proactive in a new context of market that apply more new legal regulations on sustainable production and consumption.

In details, Mondelēz Kinh Do pioneered in using packaging that is easy for recycle. 95 per cent of its total packaging, including both plastic and non-plastic, is recyclable and reusable.

The company also has plans on doing validation for lamination film (PP based material) for its products with sustainability material, as well as packaging material reduction by 20 per cent for any new product development or re-innovation project.

This important milestone contributes greatly to the company’s long-term ambition to leverage its scale to reduce the impact on the environment and its commitment to achieving 100 per cent packaging recyclable and labeled with consumer information across its portfolio by 2025.

To realize its bold commitments, Mondelēz Kinh Do has significantly stepped up its efforts to make sustainable packaging not only available but also apparent to consumers.

Mondelēz Kinh Do has also been a leader in applying plastic packaging solutions, and is always ready to share technical know-how, join hand with other peers in the same industry to seek solutions for common environmental benefits.

In addition, as a member of the Packaging Recycling Organization Vietnam (PRO Vietnam), a leading initiative focused on driving the circular economy and making recycling more accessible and sustainable, it takes a leading position in on-pack communication for recycling with transparency.

Accordingly, the company applies PRO logo on the packaging of its products as an affirmation of Mondelēz Kinh Do’s eco-friendly packaging. By choosing to purchase products made from recycled materials, consumers will play an important role in keeping plastic waste out of the environment and meaningfully contribute to a more sustainable future for people and the planet.

Raising customers' awareness about recycling through wrapping is a prime goal of Pro Vietnam, and is the first step toward the commitment of making the group's members' packaging 100 per cent recyclable.

Mondelēz Kinh Do has also been a leader in applying plastic packaging solutions, and is always ready to share technical know-how, join hand with other peers in the same industry to seek solutions for common environmental benefits.

Enterprises promote EPR in circular economy

Nguyen said that Mondelez Kinh Do's vision for sustainable development follows Mondelēz International committing to a 2050 target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions across its full value chain.

This action plan includes designing 100 per cent of packaging to be recycle ready by 2025, converting global manufacturing electricity footprint to renewable energy, starting replacing thermal fuels (such as natural gas, diesel, gasoline) with "green" alternatives.

In logistics, it plans to invest in new mobility concepts including electric and hydrogen trucks, improve efficiency of distribution networks by optimizing routes, improving truck & container utilization, increasing intermodal solutions and reducing traveled distances.

Having sustainable development thinking and long-term vision investment strategy, Mondelez Kinh Do has made careful preparations from taking advantage of technological innovations, applying digital transformation to daily sales and production activities, to lay strong foundation for future growth.

As a result, it has achieved impressive growth results against the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to Nielsen's retail audit report in Vietnam (excluding MM Mega Market Vietnam and semi-retailer channels), Mondelez Kinh Do ranked first in terms of both value share and volume share in the biscuit category in Vietnam from May 2020 to April 2021.

The company was also named in the ranking of "Top 10 Most Prestigious Food Companies" for the third year in a row announced by Vietnam Report and VietNamNet. It has received the Top 100 Sustainable Business in 2021 Award by Vietnam Business Council for Sustainable Development (CSI 100).
