Vulnerable technology transfer of enterprises still persists

By Anh Nguyen August 30, 2018 | 01:14 PM GMT+7

The issue of weak technology transfer amongst Vietnamese enterprises has again been raised at the forum “Interconnecting Model to Promote and Develop The Market of Science & Technology in Vietnam” recently held by Ministry of Science and Technology in cooperation with Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

In particular, the technological level of Vietnam enterprises is still considered to be obsolete. According to a survey of Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) in 2016, 60 percent of enterprises are using technology that is over 6 years of age, 85 per cent of Vietnamese enterprises still perform their own research and development process.

Moreover, 65 per cent of these technologies originated from developing countries, of which 26.6 per cent of technology that Vietnamese enterprises are using came from China.

The proportion of technologies originating in developed countries such as the United States, Korea, Japan or the EU is only about 32 per cent, of which over 18 per cent is technology from before 2005.

"These figures partly show the level of technology, machinery and equipment in Vietnam's manufacturing industries and the need to accelerate the technology innovation process," said President Vu Tien Loc.

As the result, President Loc said that it is an urgent requirement for technological innovation in the context of globalisation and especially in the industrial revolution 4.0 to enhance the competitiveness of Vietnamese enterprises.

Based on his opinion, the Government, enterprises and scientists are three key pillars in facilitating a more advanced technology level and technology transfer. Of which, enterprises play a crucial role to connect the Government with scientists and science academies.

President Loc added that common benefits are needed to create a value chain amongst these three pillars to promote a collaborative partnership and stronger technology transfer.
