Vietjet and ACV are requested to submit plans on upgrading US$264 million Cat Bi airport

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV), the passenger terminal of Cat Bi airport in Hai Phong city, which was inaugurated in May 2016 with a capacity of four million passengers and 800 thousand tons of cargo per year, is showing signs of overload due to the rapidly increasing number of passengers.

Last year, the number of passengers increased by 37 per cent to 1.8 million people and is forecasted to reach five million people per year by 2020, exceeding the design capacity of the passenger terminal.

Transport Minister Nguyen Van The affirmed the need to expand and upgrade Cat Bi airport to serve not only Hai Phong city but also the traveling to Ha Long Bay and Van Don Special Zone in the future.

Expectedly, in the next four years, a new passenger terminal, private cargo terminal, aircraft parking lot and car park will be constructed with total investment estimated at VND6 trillion (roughly US$264.55 million).

The Ministry of Transportation (MoT) has assigned the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) to implement the project, Vietjet Aviation Joint Stock Company (Vietjet), however, also expresses its interest in the project. Therefore, the two firms must submit the proposal to MoT, The said.

ACV and Vietjet must complete their proposal within 15 days and one of the two proposals, which is more feasible and effective than the other, will be selected and reported to the Government.

Besides flights to Phu Quoc, Buon Ma Thuot and Da Lat, Vietjet is the only airline to open commercial flights from Cat Bi to Bangkok (Thailand) and Seoul (Korea).
