The Prime Minister approves the partial adjustment of Phu Quoc island construction master plan

The Prime Minister requests the People's Committee of Kien Giang Province to supplement the partial adjustment to the scheme of Phu Quoc island construction master plan to 2030, manage and implement the planning in accordance with the law on land, urban planning and construction planning.

It is known that the scheme of Phu Quoc island construction master plan to 2030 was officially published in March 2017 after 5 years of survey and preparation. This scheme is based on the planning scheme 633 under the Prime Minister's Decision dated May 11, 2015.

This scheme aims to turn Phu Quoc into an island city with high-class service centers, national and regional science and technology centers and modern infrastructure, etc.

According to this scheme, Phu Quoc will have three large urban areas, including Duong Dong, An Thoi and Cua Can, along with a system of golf course, race track, casino and many world-class 5-star resorts.

Thanks to an advantageous geographical position such as only one-two hours of flight from major tourism centers in Southeast Asia, 150km of coastline with many beautiful beaches and primary forest, Phu Quoc has been eyed by investors for long.

Phu Quoc has favorable conditions in terms of hydro-meteorology, natural environment, mountains, forests, sea, diverse ecosystems, valuable historical and cultural relics.

Infrastructure system of Phu Quoc has been well invested and includes many important projects involved in transportation, telecommunications, hotels, restaurants, amusement parks, international airport, attracting many big investors in the field of tourism and services.

As reported by Phu Quoc Economic Zone Authority, up to now Phu Quoc has attracted 265 valid investment projects, of which 197 projects were granted investment certificates and decision on investment policy with a total area of 7,235 ha and total registered capital of VND218 trillion (US$9.6 billion).

Currently, Phu Quoc airport receives an average of 30 flights per day from three domestic flag carriers, namely Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet and Jetstar and other international airlines. Recently, Bangkok Airways has launched Bangkok-Phu Quoc air route.

Phu Quoc International Passenger Port is also under construction and is expected to handle cruise liners carrying 4,000-5,000 visitors and 20,000-tonne cargo ships when completed.

Vietnam is promoting the establishment of three special administrative-economic zones, including Van Don (Quang Ninh province), Bac Van Phong (Khanh Hoa province), and Phu Quoc (Kien Giang province).

According to the Board drafting the law on special administrative-economic zones, Phu Quoc has potential and advantages for developing marine economy, logistics, remarkably tourism service. In case the Thai Canal (also known as Kra Canal) is put into operation in the future, Phu Quoc will benefit from this canal in developing logistics services.

In addition, Phu Quoc will focus on tourism and related services since the land fund is currently limited. Based on specific advantages as well as quantitative and qualitative analysis, the business lines prioritized for development in Phu Quoc are tourism, retail and medical services.
