Ted Osius made the statement at a workshop on Vietnam-US cooperation in developing smart cities jointly held by the Vietnam Ministry of Information and Communications, the US Embassy in Vietnam, and the US Trade and Development Agency in Hanoi on June 21-22.

The workshop offered a general view on duration, roadmap and objectives of IT application in building the e-government, gearing towards smart cities.

At the event, Osius emphasised the significance of developing smart cities in the context of rapid urbanisation globally, especially in Southeast Asia and South Africa.

He underlined the necessity to build smart cities since urbanisation has posed a range of problems challenging managers and urban areas.

Nguyen Duc Chung, Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee, said Hanoi has paid heed to scientific and technological application, especially IT application in major and urgent areas, in order to raise the efficiency of city construction, management and development and provide better services for citizens and businesses.

He highlighted Hanoi’s implementation of online public service portals in different fields like justice, natural resources and environment, construction, education and training, information and communications.

Hanoi aims to complete the core components forming a smart city by 2020, covering telecommunication, security infrastructure, key database on population, land and businesses, and the e-authority, he said.

Representatives from the central city of Da Nang also shared experience in building IT database, which enables the public and businesses to contribute their opinions and supervise the performance of local departments and agencies.
