Seven out of 18 dialysis patients died during treatment at Hoa Binh hospital

Seven out of 18 kidney patients who were receiving dialysis at Hoa Binh Provincial General Hospital on Monday have died with suspected anaphylactic shock.

Despite emergency aid by the doctors, six patients died on Monday afternoon and one other died later in the evening.
As soon as the deaths were reported, the hospital turned off its dialysis machines and transferred 10 patients to Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi for further treatment. One patient could not be transferred as he is still in critical condition.
Director of the province’s Department of Health Tran Quang Khanh said that they have invited doctors from Bach Mai Hospital and other medical experts to help detect the cause of the incident.
In an urgent meeting about the incident held on Monday evening, doctor Nguyen Huu Dung, head of Dialysis Department at Bach Mai Hospital said that this was a bitter lesson for the health sector and there might be several reasons leading to the incident and they were trying to find them out.

Speaking at the meeting, director general of the Medical Examination and Treatment Department under Ministry of Health, Luong Ngoc Khue said that they have suspended the dialysis department at the hospital and would immediately move over 100 patients to Hanoi hospitals on Tuesday.
Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam has instructed the Ministry of Health and the provincial Health Department to make all efforts to save the patients and find out the causes of the incident.
