Nike, Adidas fake products found prevalently threatening genuine ones

The prevalence of fake products with labels of famous brands like Nike and Adidas is becoming a big concern in Viet Nam to threaten genuine ones.

A series of counterfeit selling and trading cases were uncovered in the past month, having raised an alarming bell on a sustainable business development plans.

The Market Surveillance Department of Gia Lai Province has just inspected eight clothing shops in the city of Pleiku and confiscated 4,444 Adidas products and 766 Nike ones. All were fake.

The shop owners also admitted that they were selling Adidas and Nike counterfeits. They were fined in total nearly US$15,000 (VND337.5 million) for their illegal business.

Ho Chi Minh City Market Surveillance Authority also identified a wholesale shop in Thu Duc District which provided a huge source of fake branded products to the local markets.

A whole bunch of Adidas-labeled clothing was found but the owner could not submit any paper of origins. Hundreds of thousands of fake products would be distributed from there to nearby provinces every day.

The majority of counterfeits in Viet Nam are sourced from China, “the factory of fake products”. Hai Phong Customs Department has recently arrested 10 containers of Adidas and Converse fake shoes made in China.

The shipment aroused suspicions from customs officials while paperwork being processed. Customs officials then opened the containers and found tens of thousands of fake shoes labeled Adidas and Converse.

Nike, Adidas and Converse are Vietnamese people’s favorite sportswear brands. According to Euromonitor, in the past years, Nike has remained as the leading brand in the local market, with a share of 14.5% in 2016. Adidas followed, occupying 14% of the market.

However, not all the Nike and Adidas fans in Viet Nam can afford those branded products. Fake ones, therefore, become their choice.

Though their quality is undoubtedly poorer, fake products are still favored with their copied appearance and low prices. With limited budgets, Vietnamese young people prefer to buy stylish designs while paying only one fifth to one fourth of retail prices.
