MARD approved VND170 billion project to develop high-quality Vietnamese coffee

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has approved the VND170 billion (roughly US$7.5 million) project to improve the quality of Vietnamese coffee to gain the higher position in the international arena.
Since 2000, Vietnam has remained the world's second-largest exporter of coffee with the export turnover of US$2.69 billion in the first 10 months of this year. However, Vietnamese coffee is still exported in the raw form and very few people in the world know about it.
Therefore, MARD has recently approved the scheme on the framework for national product development namely "High-quality Vietnamese Coffee" with a total budget of VND170 billion (roughly US$7.5 million), of which VND110 billion (roughly US$4.85 million) comes the State budget and VND60 billion (roughly US$2.65 million) comes from businesses, farmers, and credit loans.
The scheme sets a specific objective to develop linkages for production, consumption, formulating large areas of materials for high-quality coffee production with drying systems, storage facilities, and suitable processing plants. The productions of robusta coffee and arabica coffee are expected to reach 2.7 tonnes/ha and 2.0 tonnes/ha, respectively.
It is also aimed at improving the income chain of coffee growers per unit of cultivated area by increasing the value of coffee products. Accordingly, the average income of coffee growers is expected to increase by five per cent in 2020 and seven per cent by 2023, compared to the average income in the 2013-2014 crop year.
Besides, MARD expects to complete the value chain of coffee production and consumption, developing the high quality Vietnamese coffee which has high competitiveness in the domestic and international markets as well as raising the price of Vietnam's exported coffee to be equivalent to other countries in the regional and international countries ranked the same group position as Vietnam in terms of coffee quality.
The project will support at least 10 enterprises to complete the process of wet processing technology that uses enzymes and microorganisms to improve quality and reduce post-harvest losses. It will also support at least five to ten enterprises to build high-quality coffee production models.
The project is also aimed at building the high-quality Vietnamese coffee brand, ensuring that half of the leading enterprises in the coffee industry will attach the high-quality Vietnam coffee brand on their product packages.
