Chinese corporations eye on building railways in Vietnam

The huge investment demand on transport infrastructure in Vietnam interests many construction companies from China.

China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), a key constructor in China's One Belt, One Road Initiative, is considering rail projects in ASEAN countries including Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, with an aim to expand the trans-Asia railway.
According to the South China Morning Post, in August, CCCC began the construction of a US$ 11 billion East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) rail project linking the east and west coasts of Peninsular Malaysia.
It is China's largest overseas infrastructure project and the group is eyeing some of its regional neighbors.
"We have potential rail projects in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia," said Wen Gang, Vice president of CCCC on the sidelines of a conference in Hong Kong.
Together with the China Railway Group, CCCC is also planning to bid for a high-speed rail project connecting Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. The project is waiting for the approval of the two governments.
In the region, CCCC has engaged in 190 projects, worth US$ 23 billion, ranging from railroads, roads, bridges to real estate projects and industrial parks.
Prior to that, many other Chinese construction corporations also wanted to participate in infrastructure projects in Vietnam, including railways and highways.
Gezhouba Construction Group Corporation (CGGC) wishes to invest or tender highways, railways and subways projects in Vietnam. The corp's vice president and leaders of the Ministry of Transport of Vietnam held a meeting on August 3.
On August 18, the China Railway Engineering Corporation (CREC), meanwhile, asked for the permission of participating in transport infrastructure projects and railways in Vietnam, including high - speed rail and urban railway.
The subsidiary of CREC, China Railway Six Group, this now the general contractor EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) of the Cat Linh - Ha Dong railway project in Hanoi.
In the Chinese railway market, CREC accounts for two thirds of the national railway construction market.
