7-Eleven Vietnam, Triip.Me and Mekong Business Initiative (a project funded by Australian Government and Asian Development Bank), have officially launched the competition “Save the Ocean”. This competition calls for pioneering initiatives from Vietnamese business people and inventors to reduce plastic pollution in the ocean.
“Save the Ocean” includes two challenges. The first one is to develop safe and effective plastic recycling technology for Vietnam and countries that have poor recycling facilities. The second one is to design a water bottle which is elegant, inexpensive and compatible with facilities of 7-Eleven stores.
7-Eleven will sign a contract with the unit that devises the most efficient plastic recycling method. It will also agree to widely use water bottles that have the most clever design. Triip.me will encourage hotels and tourist accommodations in Vietnam to replace non-returnable bottles with the new design. The winner can win a prize of US$3,000.
Every year, oceans are choked with 8 tons of plastic waste. Plastic takes thousands of years to disappear. With this speed, by 2025, there will be 1 ton of plastic waste for every 3 tons of fish.
“Vietnam is among five countries that badly suffer from plastic pollution. Vietnam also benefits from industries that rely on clean oceans like tourism and fisheries. We highly appreciate the chances that ‘Save the Ocean’ has created for Vietnamese business people and inventors to serve the benefits of their own country,” – said Mr. Dominic Mellor, Head of MBI project, Senior Economist of the Asian Development Bank.
