Private firm to spend $432 million treating industrial park wastewater

In the next three years, Hang Huu Huynh Waste Water Treatment Joint Stock Company, owned by entrepreneur Huynh Uy Dung, will pour about $432 million to build 100 wastewater treatment plants in environmental pollution hotspots across the country.

Huynh Uy Dung (also known as Dung "lime kiln"), Chairman of Dai Nam Tourism Joint Stock Company shared about the investment and development strategies of Hang Huu Huynh Waste Water Treatment JSC.

According to Dung, on January 26, Hang Huu Huynh Company will officially inaugurate Song Than II wastewater treatment plant in Di An town, Binh Duong province.

“From now on, when developing industrial parks (IPs), we do not have to worry about the treatment of wastewater, waste discharge, pollution concentration. We are also independent on technology and capital provided by foreign investors for the treatment of industrial wastewater,” Dung said. “The wastewater after treatment will meet the standards set by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and Ministry of Health.”

Song Than II wastewater treatment plant, after being inaugurated, has a minimum treatment capacity of 10,000m3 and maximum 18,000 m3 per day. This is the first model factory in Vietnam to process industrial water into clean water by microorganism method.

According to the company’s development strategy, in the period of 2018-2021, Hang Huu Huynh will invest around VND10 trillion (roughly $432 million) to build 100 wastewater treatment plants in environmental pollution hotspots nationwide.

Dung stated that in the past time, IPs have made an important contribution to the economic growth of the country, attracting foreign investment, and creating jobs to the locals. However, the development process of industrial parks has brought many shortcomings and challenges such as the environmental pollution concerning the public.

Water resource is at an alarming rate. Thousands of industrial production units are discharging either untreated or treated wastewater, which does not meet the standards, into the environment. This has gradually polluted the clean water sources, arising implications for public health and social security.

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Vietnam now has 615 industrial clusters, only five per cent of which have centralized wastewater treatment system, and about 300 industrial parks discharging more than 2 million cubicmetres of wastewater a day. However, only over 60 per cent of discharged wastewater is treated through centralized wastewater treatment plants and up to 70 per cent is not thoroughly treated. Such wastewater is then discharged directly into ponds, lakes and rivers.

According to statistics, about 9,000 people die and over 200,000 cases are diagnosed with cancer due to the use of polluted water each year.

Hang Huu Huynh Wastewater Treatment JSC, established in October 2018, is headquartered at Ngo Duc Ke street, Ben Nghe ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh city.

Hang Huu Huynh plans to spend 30 per cent of its profit of the wastewater treatment plants doing charity and 10 per cent on environmental science research on wastewater, waste and emissions.
