Inside Samsung Vietnam: Where high-tech precision meets maternal care

By Ngoc Han August 23, 2024 | 08:10 PM GMT+7

Samsung is committed to establishing itself as a leader in employee welfare within Vietnam’s electronics manufacturing industry.

The production line for the Fold and Flip mobile phones is a world of precision. The spacious environment, meticulously controlled temperature and humidity, and attention to detail create the ideal setting to preserve the intricate components of electronic devices.

Amidst this high-tech atmosphere, a soft pink space stands out. Pink columns, dividers with pink decorations, and an image of a happy pregnant woman holding her belly characterize this unique area, aptly named the Mommy Line. This special production area is exclusively designed for pregnant female workers.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Mommy Line is equipped with amenities tailored to the needs of pregnant women, such as comfortable seating and tasks that match their physical capacity. The goal is to ensure the health and safety of both the mother and the unborn child while maintaining production efficiency.

The Mommy Line reflects Samsung Vietnam's deep concern for its pregnant employees. As Park Sung Ho, General Director of the SEV factory in Bac Ninh province and SEVT factory in Thai Nguyen province, noted, "These women, though young, are already mothers."

Happiness of expectant mothers

Nguyen Thi Hong, a Quality Control Manager at Samsung Electronics Vietnam (SEV), is expecting her third child. She had her first two children while working at Samsung.

"Each time I was pregnant, I benefited from the company’s maternity policies, including prenatal check-ups, nutritious meals, light and separate work assignments for pregnant women, and other benefits,” Hong shared.

Samsung also organizes maternity classes for pregnant workers, where they receive comprehensive information about their rights and benefits under the law and company policies.

Furthermore, Samsung invites reputable experts to provide training on nutrition for mothers and babies, relaxation exercises, and valuable parenting advice.

“The knowledge I gained from these classes has made me more confident in taking care of my child using modern, scientific methods,” said Hong.

Nguyen Thi Cuc, who holds a similar position to Hong, also expressed her happiness with the special policies for pregnant women.

“I’m currently pregnant, and since then, I’ve been assigned lighter duties, allowed to sit while working, and given priority in many areas like dining and transportation. I always feel prioritized,” Cuc said.

Cuc's situation is particularly special, as she simultaneously enjoys the benefits for mothers with children under one year old, such as access to nursing rooms, rest areas, and early leave, along with maternity benefits like supplementary meals, prenatal check-ups, and maternity insurance during maternity leave.

“I feel very reassured and want to stay with Samsung long-term,” Cuc stated.

Samsung’s commitment to its female employees extends beyond just maternity benefits. The company provides gifts for young mothers, Mommy Line programs, prenatal education, and exercise routines - all designed to support and accompany them on the safe, happy journey of motherhood.

And it’s not just the mothers. Samsung also takes care of all its employees across the conglomerate. Last year, Samsung contributed over $55.7 billion to Vietnam's export turnover.

Samsung is currently the largest foreign investor in Vietnam, with a total accumulated investment of $22.8 billion as of last year. The company operates six factories, one research and development center, and a retail entity in Vietnam.

The two Samsung factories in northernn Vietnam employ 41,271 workers, with SEV having 11,936 employees and SEVT employing 29,335.

Samsung also operates a dormitory system with 45 buildings and 5,274 rooms, accommodating over 18,000 employees. Each building is fully equipped with amenities such as air conditioning, dressing rooms, and laundry facilities to meet the essential needs of the workers.

Chu Thi Thiet, an SEV phone assembly worker from Lang Son province, only goes home once or twice a month.

“Before, I rented a place with colleagues, but the costs were high, and the facilities were inadequate, especially in the summer when it was scorching hot without air conditioning.

After registering to live in the company’s dormitory, I felt much more comfortable because the rooms are spacious and fully equipped, with air conditioning, fans, and hot water available anytime,” said Thiet.

Thiet’s new accommodation also offers exceptional facilities, such as an integrated entertainment complex with games, a cinema, cafes, supermarkets, and a canteen. All entertainment and shopping needs are met within the dormitory premises.

Additionally, Thiet has developed a habit of exercising regularly, participating in yoga and gym classes with modern equipment, provided free of charge at the dormitory.

SEVT has been awarded the “Enterprise for Employees” title for several consecutive years, a testament to its dedication to employees, creating a safe working environment, and providing comprehensive benefits that foster long-term commitment to the company.

Outstanding human resources policies

To attract and retain talent amid an ever-changing economic landscape, Samsung Vietnam has implemented a range of superior HR and welfare policies, aiming to become the ideal workplace for employees.

Nguyen Duy Danh, head of Human Resources at Samsung Vietnam, affirmed, “Samsung’s business philosophy places people first. Therefore, we strive to create a transparent, professional working environment where every individual is respected, given opportunities for personal development, and rewarded commensurately with their abilities and contributions.”

To realize this philosophy, Samsung has built a human resources policy system that strictly adheres to legal regulations while aiming to become the leading company in employee benefits within Vietnam's electronics manufacturing industry.

In addition to competitive salaries, which are 1.5 times the minimum wage, the company regularly adjusts wages and maintains bonuses, even during tough times.

Moreover, to enhance employee commitment, Samsung focuses on policies that encourage long-term dedication, such as clear promotion pathways, transparent appointment processes, and seniority-based rewards.

Recognizing the critical role of human resources in large-scale production, Samsung is committed to creating a safe, civilized working environment while implementing optimal welfare policies to support employees.

Through these efforts, Samsung aims to retain talent and inspire them to reach their full potential, contributing to the company’s prosperous and sustainable development.
